The Real Victims of the Recession
The impact of the recession still lingers and the saddest thing has been the large number of animals destroyed or surrendered by their owners. We had a case recently where a man had two cats aged 14 and 16 (who he'd had since kittens) and couldn't keep them anymore.
He called us and asked if we could take them as he could no longer afford to keep them. We were so full that we could not take any more cats onto the premises as it was such a strain to our limited resources.
However, we offered to help him with food so that he could keep the cats and continue to have them at his house. He turned around and said 'No, I just want them out now' and said that he would just take them to the SPCA.
When we said that the likelihood was particularly high that they would be euthanased due to their advanced years he said he 'just didn't care'.
This is a very sad case and he was very callous and cruel to ignore any help and to destory the family members he had raised since kittens. It is these kind of situations where we are struck with how cruel some people can be and we can only hope that he didn't go through with it - and if he did we send a thought to those beautiful cats who will have now crossed the Rainbow Bridge.
